On Oct 4 Sam and I drove to Lassen and camped after dark.
The next AM (Friday) we set out to climb Mt Lassen. We didn't quite make it to the top. Snow on the trail discouraged us within a couple hundred yards of the summit.
Returning to the campsite Bertha started being balky - not starting, quitting when put into gear. A portent of things to come...
The next morning we took an early AM hike around Manzanita lake. Then, what with the Bertha problems, we took off for Berkeley hoping to make it. We made it about one mile. Bertha concked out across the street from the park gate. We called AAA. Had her towed into Redding. We arrived in the early afternoon. All car repair places closed at noon. We were in luck - Dan, the owner of J&D was pottering around. He filled out a repair slip and promised to look at her on Monday.
We were lucky again. I called Liz and she answered - from Poker Bar! She came and took us to Poker Bar where we had a swell time 'til Monday.
On Monday, we loaded up the Prius with three people, two bassetts, and all the junk we had removed from Bertha and set out for J&D. Bertha wasn't ready yet, so we left her there and drove to Berkeley.
(The Bertha saga continues. Gary was driving Bertha back home yesterday (Oct 23) when she sprung a gas leak. He left her in Fairfax. Sam just got her put on a tow truck for Berkeley. Stay tuned...)
